In the past we learned
By living with our Masters.
We paid our way by serving them
With much love, loyalty and laughter.

Today we learn
From dead pieces of paper …
And from teachers with papers
That say that they’re Masters.

We pay our way by piling up debt
To get very expensive degrees
On the pious promise
Of the priests of modernity:
“Universal access to education
(While on the knees.)”

Most of us get this not
And just swallow the rot.
After all, no one wants to admit
They’ve been playing the patsy.

So brainwashed and blind
Our integrity unwinds
Till we’re less resilient
Than dehydrated leaves.

Smartphones do our thinking,
Our eyes glued to screens without blinking.
Asthmatic lungs struggling
In pharma-pneumatic heaves.

Set to moulds from the pram
Receiving love in measured grams
Addicts to phantasmagoric drips
From cybernetic dreams.

So … Into the woods, I say
Lets study the Good and crave
The wise whisper of the wind
In the trees.

For there we’ll fill our carts
With life’s true mystery and art
And gladly give up
All our old college creeds.

Will we stand up in faith?
Leave behind the ghosts and the wraiths
And listen to our hearts’ drumming
For flight.
