Just as the wind
Takes a weak tree,
So Mara overpowers he
Who dwells on temptation,
Is uncontrolled in the senses,
Immoderate in consumption,
Lazy and without ambition.

[audio: English & Pāli]

Just as the wind
Can’t take a rocky mountain,
So Mara can’t overpower one
Who dwells on the unattractive
Is controlled in the senses
Moderate in consumption,
Faithful, with strong determination.
