This is what should be done
By way of effective means,
Having seen the path of peace.
Be able and upright,
Straight-forward and gentle in speech.
Gentle and not conceited,
Content and easily satisfied,
Unburdened with duties
And frugal in one’s ways.
Peaceful and calm and wise and skilful,
Not proud or demanding or others.
Do not do the slightest thing
The wise would later reprove.
Wishing in gladness and in safety:
“May all beings be happy!”
Whatever living beings there may be,
Whether they are was or strong,
The great of the mighty,
Medium, short, subtle or gross.
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to be born,
May all being be happy!
Let none deceive others,
Nor despise anyone anywhere
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So towards all living beings
One should develop a boundless heart.
One should develop a boundless heart
Of goodwill towards the entire world:
Upwards, downwards and all around
Without barriers, hatred or enmity.
Whether standing or walking,
Seated or lying down,
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection,
This is said to be a divine abiding.
By not clinging to views,
The virtuous ones,
Having completeness of vision,
With all temptations defeated,
Are not born again into this world.
